The primary training text for the Transpersonal Hypnotherapy/NLP Certification Program offered by the Institute for Therapeutic Learning is Finding True Magic. This book and the associated trainings cater to both laypeople seeking personal growth and therapists/professionals looking to enhance their therapeutic skills. In fact, around 50% of ITL students enroll primarily for personal development.
This work explores the possibility of recognizing and freeing ourselves from a destructive process of perceiving, thinking, and acting that could be viewed as a pernicious worldwide epidemic. Unlike other diseases we strive to isolate and cure, this insidious "fever" has a characteristic that blinds us to its presence - we come to identify its symptoms as our true self. We fondly refer to this condition as our "ego," our sense of limited, separate selfhood. Elias terms it "egoic-minding," as it is a process, not a fixed entity.
Egoic-minding is a fragmented, biased mode of perceiving and thinking. It can be seen as a sort of destructive hypnotic trance, causing us to experience each other as strangers, different, and threatening. The delirium of this trance leads us to harm one another and our world, without recognizing that the true enemy is our egoic thought process.
Finding True Magic synthesizes insights and techniques from Eastern and Western philosophy and psychology to explore ways of dispersing the feverish trance of egoic-minding, healing the trauma it causes, and awakening us to the sacred magic of our true Self - the wellspring of our capacity for cooperation, community, and the celebration of life.
Everyone has the right to utilize the essential insights and dynamics of healing communication without relying on a professional intermediary in the long term. The model of therapeutic relationships has evolved due to the financial burdens on the medical system. However, therapy and therapists should change not only for financial reasons, but because there is a more effective approach to healing and personal growth.
That approach, the subject of this book, relies on the inherent goodness of our shared Being - a resource surprisingly easy to access in the space between egoic thoughts. Most of us do not experience this space in the normal course of thinking, given the seemingly impenetrable stream of our thoughts. Yet this space of Silence, Healing Power, and Insight is quite real.
We have all encountered this silence through prayer, love, or awe. But we have not been taught, and have remained unaware, that this silent Presence is always readily available. Holistic mind/body therapeutic techniques, as presented here, derive transformative power when they help us tap into this willing Presence, also called Grace.
